Kelly McBride, Century Building Solutions and Pawan Gupta, PE SE PhD, Walter P. Moore & Associates
The City of Santa Monica operates a series of high-traffic parking garages that serve the popular 3rd Street Mall shopping venue that began to display deflection and cracking after years of service. When the structural engineer was retained to investigate, he immediately “red-tagged” the first structure and brought in a contractor to install emergency shoring so that the city maintenance department could to continue to operate in the first floor where they had their central operations, not to mention keep the upper access lanes open to ensure the parking revenue stream from the upper five floors. Pawan Gupta, PE SE PhD of Walter P. Moore & Associates and Kelly McBride of Century Building Solutions, Inc. will present an analysis of the project which discovered that the lack of waterproofing and exposure to the ocean environment only a few blocks away had resulted in severe deterioration of the post-tension cables and forced an expensive and unplanned remediation repair.

Tanya Komas, Ph.D., CPI Foundation
Dr. Komas discusses CPI’s work to train and inspire military service members and connect them to civilian careers while repairing landmark structures. Through powerful imagery, historical connection, and motivational stories, she highlights work at Pearl Harbor, Alcatraz Island, and Pointe du Hoc, Normandy, France, demonstrating how timing is critical for durable structures and our industry’s need to redefine workforce development – particularly with regard to military veterans - as a new market with new rules. The non-profit CPI Foundation is an official US military active duty Career Skills Program, partner of the National Park Service, and partner of industry companies and associations such as SWR Institute whose support makes CPI’s programs possible.
