Project Category: Masonry Restoration
Following the catastrophic events of September 11, 2001, the scope of work for restoring the limestone exterior of the Pentagon changed dramatically. Salvaging and cleaning the stones around the point of impact fell to MasonryArts, a Bessemer, Alabama based contractor. Crews worked around the clock to restore the limestone façade of Wedge One, the Pentagon's southwest facing corner. Damaged stones were typically 5 feet long, 2 feet wide and half a foot thick. MasonryArts cleaned the burned and blackened limestone using PROSOCO's EnviroKlean Degreaser, an industrial strength detergent. Degreaser stripped away thick coatings of black carbon and jet fuel residue. On June 11, exactly 9 months after the attack, workers reattached the last limestone block to Wedge One walls. Cleaning with Sure Klean Vana Trol is the final step in the façade restoration.
