Verizon HQ- 1095 Avenue of the Americas - Seaboard Weatherproofing

Verizon contracted Seaboard Weatherproofing Co. (through Tishman, their Construction Managers) to perform a façade rehabilitation of this prominent building located on 42nd Street and 6th Avenue. The façade's design consists of: • 1-1/8” thick white marble cladding over precast concrete back-up wall • Window panel system • To a lesser degree granite panels at the base/sidewalk level of building The rehabilitation work was started in early spring and had to be completed before the onset of winter weather. Certain operations (façade cleaning, painting of louvers, etc.) were performed at night and on overtime in order to meet the schedule but also to minimize the impact on the General Public. Safety was of utmost concern, especially with more than (35) Waterproofing Mechanics working at a fast pace. Technical challenges had to be resolved with the Architects and Consultants, especially the fastening and securing of the fragile marble panels. Several Engineering concepts were tested ‘on the wall' with numerous pull tests before the final fastener system was selected. A 100% inspection/sounding of the panel condition was performed with access from suspended scaffolds; many defects were discovered resulting in many more panel replacements than originally thought. Matching of the replacement marble in regards to color, shading, finish and texture with the existing wall panels was of great importance as well. The work was performed by skilled Union craftsmen, competent Supervisors and an experienced Project Manager to the full satisfaction of the Architects and Verizon (Tishman) their client.
